Deer Mountain Hatchery Fish Culturist  

Full Time, Hourly

Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) is recruiting for a full-time fish culturist at the Deer Mountain Hatchery in Ketchikan, Alaska.  Deer Mountain Hatchery is a small salmon hatchery that produces Chinook salmon, coho salmon, and rainbow trout for release in fresh and salt waters around Southeast Alaska. This position requires workplace flexibility and includes a remote Chinook salmon rearing project in Carroll Inlet during April – May each year, as well as assisting in operations at other SSRAA hatcheries in and around Ketchikan.

The primary duties of this position include working with the hatchery manager as a two-person team in all aspects related to fresh and saltwater salmonid rearing, in addition to basic maintenance and repair of supporting hatchery infrastructure as needed. The hatchery also conducts salmon related outreach with local schools and organizations, with the potential for the return of onsite tourism in summer 2023. The fish culturist participates in outreach and tourism related functions as needed.

The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, detail-oriented, and would be able to effectively multitask, communicate, build consensus, and compromise. Applicants must be able to develop and maintain working relationships with co-workers and is willing to learn, share ideas, and develop skills.  Previous experience in fish husbandry, a closely related field, or as a part of previous education is required. The successful candidate must have or be able to obtain a valid Alaska Driver’s license.  The job requires the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 50lbs or more.  Work is often conducted outdoors in inclement weather or inside around cold, running water.
