Ketchikan Port Sampler
Southern Southeast Regional Aquaculture Association (SSRAA) has an opening for a seasonal port sampler in Ketchikan, Alaska, with potential travel to other southeast Alaska communities.
This position will focus on the collection of biological data from chum salmon at the local fish processing plants. Tasks involved include, but are not limited to: the extraction of otoliths, the collection of sex and weight samples, accurately recording data for individual sample sets, and following appropriate lab protocol for processing otoliths.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation while based in Ketchikan. Transportation and lodging will be provided in communities outside of Ketchikan during work travel. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated, interested in fisheries, detail oriented, have good communication skills, be proficient in salmon identification, willing to work in inclement conditions, and must be able to lift 40 pounds. Experience working in fisheries is preferred, but not necessary. Proof of vaccination against COVID-19 is required.
This position will run June 1st to September 30th, with the potential for continued employment. Starting pay is $16.41/hr or greater DOE. This position is full time and requires a flexible schedule, with some evening and weekend work required. SSRAA is an equal opportunity employer.
