PUBLIC COMMENT DEADLINE MONDAY: Alaska Board of Fisheries Proposals

Your Voice is Needed!

Public Comment Due Monday, March 2nd

The Alaska Board of Fisheries is scheduled to review three hatchery-related proposals at its upcoming statewide meeting — Proposals 170, 171, and 172.

These proposals would introduce sweeping reductions — or even temporary shutdowns — of Alaska’s Private Nonprofit (PNP) salmon hatchery program. However, they do so without presenting clear scientific evidence that hatchery production is directly responsible for the conservation concerns cited.

Together, these measures would move away from Alaska’s long-standing science-based, adaptive management approach. Instead of targeted solutions supported by data, they propose broad regulatory actions that could:

  • Disrupt fisheries stability
  • Impact coastal economies and working families
  • Create precedent for policy decisions without demonstrated biological necessity

Alaska’s fisheries management system has historically relied on data, research, and adaptive strategies. Proposals of this scale deserve careful consideration and meaningful public input.
